Welcome to the Blog
In our fast-paced world, many of us find ourselves caught in an endless cycle of to-do lists, responsibilities, and expectations. We rush from one obligation to the next, rarely pausing to truly experience our lives. This constant busyness creates a profound sense of disconnection—from ourselves, from others, and from what truly matters to us. Without realizing it, we slip into a state of purposeless existence, going through the motions without genuine engagement or joy.
But there’s a way back to feeling fully alive and present. Mindful presence—the practice of bringing your complete attention to the current moment without judgment—serves as a powerful bridge from disconnected autopilot to intentional living. By learning to anchor ourselves in the now, we can break free from the trance of routine and rediscover what makes our hearts come alive. This isn’t about complicated meditation techniques or drastic life changes; it’s about remembering how to be present in the simple, everyday moments that make up our lives.
After my divorce, I found myself in this place too–drifting through life on autopilot. The days blurred together as I moved through motions that felt hollow and disconnected, and questioned what to do next.
Being in this place of feeling uncertain, while also bearing the weight of what you know you need to rebuild and rediscover, can feel scary, and like a lot of pressure. It sure did for me.
But, after a little while, I realized–it didn’t have to.
I could simply have fun while I figured it all out.
Think about it: Who are the ultimate beginners in this world?
Children!
They face new challenges and discoveries every single day. Everything is unknown territory to them. Yet instead of being paralyzed by all they don’t know, they approach each day with excitement and wonder.
Children don’t feel the pressure of uncertainty—they thrive in it. They don’t worry about getting things “right” the first time. They try, they fall, they laugh, they try again. The very same challenges and unknowns that we as adults find overwhelming, children turn into fun adventures.
That’s when it hit me. What if I approached rebuilding my life with the same spirit of play and discovery? What if I saw myself not as someone who “should know better” but as a beginner again, free to explore and experiment?
So, my mission turned from “start over” to “just become a kid again”.
When you’re a child, you’re free spirited, you’re doing all the things, you’re loving life. And then all of a sudden you’re an adult, and you’re told how life is and how you’re going to be, which just beats the child out of you.
This happens to many of us, and not just from divorce. We end up in places in life where we forget how to feel joy. Which causes us to disconnect, shut down, and drift.
I was recently on the Access Your Mastermind podcast where they asked what advice I would give to someone who is struggling to have faith and see how things could work out and get better for them. And, my answer was simple: Go back to your childhood, remember how free you were as a child, and then think of that child and bring that into your present moment.
Now, when I say “Go back to your childhood,” and “be like a child,”–I don’t mean “get a diaper and a nookie.” I mean, “Go out and dance in the rain or splash in some puddles. Who cares? Wear an old pair of shoes and just go jump in a bunch of puddles! Have fun and explore the world around you.”
Because when you’re stuck in autopilot for years, you need to work on mindful presence and play. You need to break free from feeling like you’re in this little cage–because then you’re not free.
And this extends to relationships too. So, in your relationships–be silly, do funny things like get a Nerf gun and leave it at the door so your partner, or a friend can start shooting back. Just keep that joy, play, and fun. Because without it, you just become an adult, and you do all the adult things, and before you know it, you forget to have fun.
Throughout this article, you’ll discover practical ways to reconnect with your playful spirit and bring mindful presence into your everyday life. You’ll learn specific grounding techniques for those moments when life feels overwhelming, explore how to identify your core values as anchors for purposeful decisions, and discover a simple 5-day ritual to reset your internal compass when you feel adrift. So, whether you’re navigating a major life transition or simply feeling stuck in a rut, I hope these practices will help you to break free from autopilot and create a life of authentic joy, meaningful connection, and purposeful success—one present moment at a time.
Have you ever driven home and suddenly realized you don’t remember the journey? Or eaten a meal while watching TV, only to look down and wonder where all the food went? These are classic examples of what I call “drifting” and what neuroscientists refer to as operating from your Default Mode Network.
What happens is when you’re not actively focused on a task, your brain activates its autopilot system—efficient for routine tasks but disconnected from the richness of experience. So when you’re in this state, you’re technically functioning, but you’re not really present. You’re just drifting.
Other signs you might be living in a state of drifting might look like:
The problem with living on autopilot is that life literally passes you by as you drift along without paying much attention.
Mindful presence, on the other hand, is the practice of fully engaging with your current experience. When you’re present, your attention is anchored in the now, allowing you to experience life directly rather than through the filter of habitual thinking.
5 Powerful Grounding Techniques to Cultivate Mindful Presence During Overwhelming Moments
When life feels chaotic or you notice you’ve been operating on autopilot, here are five grounding techniques can bring you back to the present moment:
This simple exercise is one of my favorites–it engages all five of your senses to anchor you in the present.
One: Name 5 things you can see right now (look for details you normally overlook)
Two: Touch 4 things and notice their texture (rough, smooth, warm, cool)
Three: Listen for 3 distinct sounds (both obvious and subtle ones)
Four: Identify 2 things you can smell (or like to smell)
Five: Notice 1 thing you can taste (or the current taste in your mouth)
Practice this whenever you feel overwhelmed or disconnected. It takes just 30-60 seconds but can completely reset your nervous system.
Try this simple practice to bring awareness back to your physical body in only a few minutes:
This practice reconnects you with your physical self when you’ve been lost in thought.
The 4-7-9 breathing pattern is particularly effective during stressful situations:
You can use this method discreetly during meetings, difficult conversations, or whenever you notice tension building in your body.
This one is so important and has always been what I lean on most. Getting out in nature, even in urban environments, can completely change your mood and make you feel more connected to the world around you. Try this in combination with the sensory technique I mentioned previously to really immerse yourself in a moment in nature. Express gratitude for the world around you, including plants, animals, and any sensations you feel. Turn your phone off and be truly present for this moment. Being close to nature is being close to your higher self.
Try these three simple movements that can be done anywhere to bring your awareness back to mindful presence:
Rooting Down:
Energy Circulation:
I recently went on a retreat where for five days I did a digital detox, meditated every day, did sound bath healing, and yoga. And, it really put in perspective for me how much a difference of just 5 days of complete intention can do. So, I decided to write up a 5 day reset ritual to help you reset your internal compass and find mindful presence again. Even if you have been disconnected from it for a very long time.
Do this for 5-Days:
Morning Ritual (30 minutes):
Evening Ritual (15 minutes):
Your body is constantly sending signals about your state of presence or autopilot. Physical signs that you’ve slipped into default mode include:
Emotional indicators include:
Common environmental triggers that activate autopilot:
When you notice these signs, the PAUSE Method offers a simple framework for interrupting autopilot:
P: Physically stop: Whatever you’re doing, and pause. And just take a single conscious breath.
A: Awareness check: Notice your body sensations, thoughts, and emotions without judgment.
U: Understand your current state: Ask yourself: “What’s happening right now? What do I need?”
S: Select an intentional response: Choose how to proceed based on your values rather than habit.
E: Engage mindfully: Continue with full attention on your chosen action.
This method works especially well for when you are in these scenarios:
Research consistently shows that mindfulness practices are more sustainable when supported by a community. In one study at Massachusetts General Hospital, participants who practiced mindfulness with a group showed 65% better adherence to their practice than those who practiced alone.
